I want to study Mandarin online, but I don't want to be ripped off. Can someone personally recommend on online course that is honest and reasonably priced?

I want to study Chinese, but I have to study at home. Do you think studying Chinese online is a good choice?

Ok I’m looking to learn a new language, and would like to try to learn Chinese. I am wondering what are some good resources or software/programs that would help me learn Chinese. I have no prior knowledge of any Chinese or any other Asian language for that matter. Pimsleur sometimes uses words/phrases in the audio without listing the words/phrases in their dictionary/lesson guide, it's very annoying. That's the best interpretation I can do-- can someone provide me with tones and correct this daily Chinese expression for me? Thanks!

I just saw a part of a Chinese drama and this girl calls a guy that. I think it's something rude because he called her a pig lady before that so she's being mean back at him.

I'm not too familiar with foreign languages especially one as exotic as Chinese, but I was wondering if it was possible to be literate in their character based script. I know that it incorporates many different dialects of Chinese with many speakers finding their language to be unintelligible with Mandarin, so I thought it could be possible for an outsider to decipher their writing system. Since their writing system is descended from pictorial caricatures is it possible to read Chinese without actually being fluent in their spoken language?
