When the Map is Unrolled, the Dagger is Revealed 图穷匕首见 - tu qiong bi shou xian The word 穷 means poor, why is it translated as unrolled? Can it mean that too?

I am currently listening to audio lessons to learn Mandarin, and I will start to go to Chinese school tomorrow. I live in Vancouver and all my friends are Asian, if I talk to them in mandarin everyday and they correct me how long do you think it will take me to learn Mandarin pretty fluently.

How to learn Chinese tone-- are tones usually neutral at end of sentences?

Pimsleur very often just ignores the tone of a word when it’s at the end of a sentence-- WHY? For example "Liu jia liu shi duo shao?" -- Instead of giving shao the 3rd tone, it gives it a neutral tone similar to "ma" Why is this? By the way, do you have any good suggestions on how to learn Chinese pinyin?
