I want to learn Chinese language, want to see the Great Wall!!!

Well, I'm a high school student and most likely won't be able to visit China any time soon, so what are other ways I can learn? Are there any websites/programs out there that have native speakers say something? Also, what is the best way to memorize characters? I'm having a hard time remembering how to write them. Should I learn simplified Mandarin and traditional? I want to visit China in the future. Are there any benefits to learning both? From what I understand, Traditional is only used in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Thank you :)

Alright here it is: I went to Seattle for my holiday because I have family and friends that live there as well as a house. I lived in Seattle before I moved to Bei Jing this is why I frequently visit. I stayed in Seattle for three weeks at my old house. During this time I saw many old friends, snowboarded and family members from australia came and visited. My grandmother and grandfather on my mother side came from sydney to share christmas with us. An aunt and uncle also stayed for a few weeks in our house with us. My eldest sister came with her boyfriend on christmas. Both of them already live America. There are mountains to snowboard on within 30 minutes of my house. My favorite part of my holiday was seeing my old friends. Many of them can drive which made it easy to see a lot of them. Christmas and New Years were also fun with my family.

Hiiiiiii everyone! I've wanted to learn Chinese fluently for a long time now, and this year my school offered Rosetta Stone as a class. So, I started the Mandarin Chinese course. If any of you know what Rosetta Stone is like you know it's not a very effective way to learn Chinese, unless you live with someone who can help you. So I have a few grammar questions. For example: zhe ge nan ren zai chi fan. I think this means: A man eating rice, or maybe The man eats rice? I'm not sure! please verify. Another example: yi ge ping guo. Could this mean: An Apple? I have many problems with this kind of thing in Chinese! /: hmmmm. Well sorry for the length of this question, and the lack of tone marks over the pinyin. Help would be appreciated.
