I think it would be great if my children could start to learn some Chinese for kids at an early age. I really want them to get started on it but I'm not sure what Chinese books for kids I should get for them. One is 5 and the other is 7. Thanks in advance!

I was once acquainted with people from Tianjin and Beijing. I noticed that when they speak Mandarin, the "w" sounds like an English "v". For example, "wen" sounds like "ven", "wang" sounds like "vang". Is this sound variation part of the Beijing or Tianjin dialects of Northern Chinese (北方話)? Where else does this sound change occur?

I really want to learn Chinese but I don't have the money to take classes. I've been downloading some great audio lessons with pdf transcripts but I just don't know where to start. What should I learn first? The four tones? grammar? writing ? survival phrases ? I'm just very confused. Can anybody help? does anyone know a good free website that can help ? Maybe that has all the grammar rules as well.. thanks !!!

I noticed that in Chinese, "if" clauses always start with "如果", but sometimes also end with "的話". Is "的話" optional? How do you know when to use it?

I speak French and English fluently. (French is my native language). I'm thinking about learning a third language and my choices are: Mandarin or Arabic. Since I plan on getting involved in public/international affairs, both would be very useful. Any suggestions? Have you learned either of those languages? Did you take classes? (I want to be able to speak either one of those and write as well)
