Some chinese questions for the chinese experts :)?
Thanks!
1. What is the difference between can(1st tone) and cai (4th tone)
2. Do both of these mean "He has finished eating the diced chicken" -- Ta ba jiding chiwan le AND ta chiwan le jiding
Why would anybody ever use the "ba" construction, seems like a massive hassle
3. "I didn't see the movie because there were a lot of people" -- dui ma --> Wo meiou kandao yinwei you hen duo ren le
4. "Too western for him" -- my main question is how to add "for her" or "for him" in this type of phrasing.
Is this right --> Ta de tai xifang le

Hiiiiiii everyone!
I've wanted to learn Chinese fluently for a long time now, and this year my school offered Rosetta Stone as a class. So, I started the Mandarin Chinese course.
If any of you know what Rosetta Stone is like you know it's not a very effective way to learn Chinese, unless you live with someone who can help you.
So I have a few grammar questions.
For example:
zhe ge nan ren zai chi fan.
I think this means: A man eating rice, or maybe The man eats rice? I'm not sure! please verify.
Another example:
yi ge ping guo.
Could this mean: An Apple?
I have many problems with this kind of thing in Chinese! /:
hmmmm. Well sorry for the length of this question, and the lack of tone marks over the pinyin. Help would be appreciated. (;
Additional Details
Thank you! ((:

I was once acquainted with people from Tianjin and Beijing. I noticed that when they speak Mandarin, the "w" sounds like an English "v". For example, "wen" sounds like "ven", "wang" sounds like "vang". Is this sound variation part of the Beijing or Tianjin dialects of Northern Chinese (北方話)? Where else does this sound change occur?
