so i have started to learn mandarin chinese cause my parents know it and i feel ashamed cause i am 14 and full chinese. so i know all the basics like hello, this that, love, goodbye, how are you, long time no see, all that stuff. but i was wondering why is there so many mandarin words for one word for english equivalent, like for run there is zou and pao, how do i know which to use? can you give me a list of words that have multiple mandarin words for 1 english word like run and hurt? i dont know which to use and it is killing me! thanks!

Do you know a good program to learn Mandarin Chinese?, i am a beginner, so i know anything about chinese. I've heard of Rosetta Stone, and one that begins with P..., i don't remember the name. I tried Eurotalk, but the software was crappy, really it looks like made by a 4 year old. I am looking for an interactive one, that can help me learn writing, speaking and listening. On the holidays I went to CC Island. It was windy and the plane we flew in was very small so I ended up getting dizzy when I got off. The weather was cold at times but mostly warm. The island is small but there were many interesting things. The island is beautiful and we had a good view from where we stayed. Because it was warm, we went bush walking everyday. The trail was long but there were many things to look at including plants and animals. Because of the weather and season the bush was full of different types of butterflies. We participated in many of the activities which were held on the island. We took many photos and had lots of fun. We look forward to going there again.

So I’m starting to learn Mandarin and I have noticed that when I look up words on my iPod Mandarin dictionary, that there are multiple words in Mandarin for one word in English. I'm starting a degree in Chinese in September - The course is on scratch but the first year is supposed to be extremely intensive and they advise everyone to try and get a head start on the language learning. So far I have a really good book that teaches you the characters which I am working through - but it doesn't say anything about Chinese grammar/sentence structure. I am starting lessons with a tutor soon but before then I was wondering if anyone could explain just the basics of Chinese grammar? Or any good links to websites and things?
