My name is Eric, and when I started to learn Mandarin, my teacher assigned me this name: 尔瑞. She never told me the meaning, and I would like to know. I think I know what the individual characters mean; I just don't understand what they mean together.

I know that there are over 47,000 characters and about a 25% of those are in use today. I also know that in order to be literate in China you have to know around 3,000 to 4,000 characters. What I am wondering is how could they possibly remember all of those. Is there some sort of trick to it that they use in order to learn them? Are they all connected? I just want know if it’s as hard as it looks.

I would like only fluent speakers in the language or fair speakers in the language to answer please. No translators thank you!

Hi all, I have tried learning Mandarin before, but unfortunately it was an online course that ended after a couple of lessons. That way I only had introductions and some minor asking where 'something' is, like: "Xue yuan lu zai na er?" "Na er". If you know what I mean (hope I did it correct) Anyway I also took a look at AskBenny, but only the beginners level is free after that it's pay time.... So does anyone know any good (free) resources for Mandarin Chinese? Also, does anyone have some tips on it?
