I often default to the most commonly used "和", but wonder in many cases when the other forms would be more appropriate. Would be helpful if one could provide some english analog examples as well with the explaination.

Ok I know this is sort of a dumb question but I'm just curious what other people think. I sort of want to learn Chinese, but I feel like I will just completely fail at pronouncing the words and sound really dumb. I feel like with an American accent, I'd sound really horrible and somewhat superficial trying to speak Chinese. normally i'm pretty good with crossovers from language to language. but i always mess up when it comes to names from asian countries. i know this person, their facebook profile has the english name (chinese name) setup on their profile.. it looks like Xiaowei Dong (董晓玮). of course in english we know it as Xiaowei Dong but translation from chinese goes to Dong Xiaowei. i'm embarassed to ask this but is the person's first name Xiaowei or is the first name Dong when speaking in english? and i am a friend that is permitted to use first name basis. also my chinese is very rough but does 董晓玮 mean something like "Small Throne of the East"?
