Well, I'm a high school student and most likely won't be able to visit China any time soon, so what are other ways I can learn?
Are there any websites/programs out there that have native speakers say something?
Also, what is the best way to memorize characters? I'm having a hard time remembering how to write them.
Should I learn simplified Mandarin and traditional? I want to visit China in the future. Are there any benefits to learning both? From what I understand, Traditional is only used in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
Thank you :)

I've done research but I can't find the answers to a few questions. How old exactly is mandarin Chinese ? Was it derived from Cantonese? Was it created specifically by the officials in Beijing as an artificial language or did it evolve naturally from an older Beijing dialect? Did old Mandarin chinese have more than 4 tones? Any insight you can provide me will be greatly appreciated

I am a beginning Mandarin Chinese learner and am wondering about beginner Chinese conversation.
Is it appropriate to begin a Chinese conversation with both Ni hao and Ni hao ma, or is it redundant. Chinese conversation example:
A: Ni hao. Ni hao ma?
B: Hen hao. Xiexie. Ni na?....
Thank you! (And I do know that I am missing the tones for the pinyin, I'm simply cutting them out for simplicity).

I recently took an interest in learning Chinese, but I don't have any resources.
Back when I was learning Japanese, it was made pretty easy and structured.
I found many step by step guides on what it is that I should do.
1. Learn the HIragana
2. Learn the Katakana
3. Learn the Kanji
4. Learn Sentence Structure
Also, there was a very nice website with the Kanji categorized by grade level making it easy.

Is there anything like this link above for learning Chinese?
Preferably Mandarin.

I've always wondered- does Chinese have any roots like how Spanish has Latin roots? Where did Chinese come from?

I can speak Chinese alright, but my mom wants me to take classes to learn how to read and write. I really hate to do that crap. I am also learning Spanish in school and I think Spanish is more important in America than Chinese because many more people can speak Spanish. I will never in this lifetime do both. What do you guys think?
