I'm in college majoring in philosophy and want a language since I know it will stimulate new ways of thinking and new perspectives. I seek wisdom. I think an Asian language will be great for this and I have zeroed in on just these two languages of all the other Asian languages.
Note: I'm not interested in career prospects, just the language that will stimulate my mind and help me develop new ways of thinking.

I currently speak english, german, dutch, hindi, punjabi and you might count latin but I don't really speak it, but do know it very well.
I'm guessing mandarin, spanish and french would be one of the most important ones.
Spanish and french share some things don't they? I had a few spanish lessons and my sister knows french and it was a little similar, atleast on paper, haha.
Mandarin is what interests me the most though. But I'm not sure if I would ever have a use for it.
What do you guys think would be a good language to learn? Which would be more useful?
Doesn't have to be spanish, french or mandarin, they just seemed pretty much one of the most spoken languages to me, not sure though.

How can you tell the difference by listening to it? I'm sure the writing is the same since they're both Chinese dialects so I don't think there should be a difference in writing, unless I'm wrong haha.

i need the essays for a project, it must be a little bit long about 200 words maximum, my teacher hates short essays that's why, and that it has to be a really GOOD essay with NO mistakes at all! It could also have some idioms in it that would be nice!
