I've heard that when the leaders of the 1911 Xinhai Revolution (辛亥革命) were deciding on which dialect to use as the new national standard, Mandarin beat Cantonese by only one vote. However, I also been told that this is just a myth, an urban legend.
Anyone know either way whether this is true?

I heard that when the Manchus (满族) conquered China in 1644, their Altaic language affected northern dialects, thus resulting in the modern Mandarin dialects. Does anyone know of any specific examples of this phenomenon, such as sound changes, vocabulary, or grammar?

Hello, Can somebody help me read this and tell me what it means? Please no software translations, thanks.

Hello,
Can anyone help me to translate this name into Chinese? "Vũ Hồng Thy"
I don't clearly know what does Thy mean. Some people say it is the same with Thi, which is Poem.
And the Vũ too. my friend said it means Cloud, but i personally think it means Rain, and on wiki, it says the word Vũ is the same with Võ, which means military 武. i am not so sure about this.
Thank you very much.
