How can you tell the difference by listening to it? I'm sure the writing is the same since they're both Chinese dialects so I don't think there should be a difference in writing, unless I'm wrong haha.

I hope someone can give me any helpful feedback on this. When I make retroflex sounds, i.e. initials ch, r, zh, my teeth tend to clank together (especially my canines). The sounds come out recognizable, however, I imagine this could do damage to my teeth in the long term. I imagine I am doing something wrong? Or perhaps it is common for teeth to clank together when making these sounds?

I'm currently trying to learn Chinese (I put the quotes because I don't recognize 'nationality'), and the books and audio I'm learning from give nouns for Chinese translation.
Also, I've picked up on different constructed languages, and I haven't come across any language that doesn't use nouns.
Yet, I heard an Alan Watts presentation the other day that described Chinese as having no nouns ("I can't recall a single instance of a noun in Chinese"). Alan described the idea of nouns, or objectifying, as a purely "Western" thing.
Is this true??
How do "Chinese" go about communicating without nouns?
It's easy for me to see no nouns in some instances, but not for all. Would there be anything like pronouns still used?
Thanks for your help!

normally i'm pretty good with crossovers from language to language. but i always mess up when it comes to names from asian countries. i know this person, their facebook profile has the english name (chinese name) setup on their profile.. it looks like Xiaowei Dong (董晓玮). of course in english we know it as Xiaowei Dong but translation from chinese goes to Dong Xiaowei. i'm embarassed to ask this but is the person's first name Xiaowei or is the first name Dong when speaking in english? and i am a friend that is permitted to use first name basis.
also my chinese is very rough but does 董晓玮 mean something like "Small Throne of the East"?
