I am currently learning Chinese mandarin, and I do not know how to write the language... I can look at the letter A and know how to start it, but when I look at a Chinese character, I don’t even know how to start, WHERE do I even start? How am I suppose to know where it starts and ends???

I've done research but I can't find the answers to a few questions. How old exactly is mandarin Chinese ? Was it derived from Cantonese? Was it created specifically by the officials in Beijing as an artificial language or did it evolve naturally from an older Beijing dialect? Did old Mandarin chinese have more than 4 tones? Any insight you can provide me will be greatly appreciated

I am studying Spanish and Chinese. I got to a university to learn Chinese and I live in China. But I can speak some Spanish as well. I am using the ROsetta Stone and My bf says Spanish. I also have lots of Spanish friends. I am learning it for myself tho. I am pretty familiar with the rules of both languages tho. I even listen to music in both languages and watch movies. I just need help in figuring out quicker but successful methods of retaining what i have so far. Days seem to fly by. I study all day and sometimes halfway thru the night. There has go to be a better way. Thank you anyone and everyone willing to help :)
