I will be entering college next year and I am very interested in taking mandarin classes when I enter college. I want to be ready as possible for the classes. I can't afford rosetta stone so what is an alternative to self studying mandarin?

I moved to Canada from China when I was five years old, so I never went to school there. I never learned how to read or write Chinese, and now I really want to, but I can never remember all the characters. Plus, I'm in high school so I don't have a lot of time with school and piano and volleyball. Any ideas?

I'm a female and I'd like to what I can say to get my points acrossed.
How do you say:
I'd like to get my hair trimmed. Just cutting a few inches and no styling.
I'd like to get my hair layered. I prefer my hair thinned out at the ends.
I'm trying to grow my hair long so I would not like any layers but to even out my hair length.
I'd like to highlight my hair / I'd like to dye my hair.
Appreciate the help! Thanks.

I am learning Mandarin Chinese and am a bit confused about when it is necessary to use the particle 'le' to form the past tense and when it can be omitted. Also how do I know whether I should put it directly after the verb or at the end of the sentence?

The pin yin "Sh" is roughly the same as in english as in "shhhhh". And the vowel "i" in pin yin is pronounced "eee". I understand that the second tonal mark is a mid to high rising sound. So why isn't the word for 10 "Shí" pronounced "She" (ending with a high tonal inflection). Why is the "ee" sound turned into almost an "r" sound as in the word "shear"? Any help would be appreciated.
