I'm actually looking for the title of Joseph Heller's novel "Catch 22" and haven't had any luck. I'd like to get a hold of this book. I'm thinking it's something along the lines of “诡计二十二” (gui-3 ji-4). (Catch in this case is not as in "to catch a ball", but rather, when something seems to good to be true or too easy, often there is a "catch". This catch is an unseen detail that makes the situation much less appealing than it initially seemed. For example: someone offers to sell you his new Mercedes for $500....that sounds too good to be true....what's the catch? The catch is that it's down at the bottom of this lake....just give me the money and it's yours!!)

i mean it is the official language of china but there are so many dialects i don't know where mandarin is spoken. Also is standard mandarin the same one that is spoken in taiwan?

I recently watched a film in Mandarin Chinese about a teacher, and not once the word "laoshi" was used. Is it possible to just say "shi" or is there another word for "teacher"?

I have a big experience with studying Kanji and unlike most of my friends, I REALLY love Kanji! I just love their structure, their logic. Even if I dont know one character, I can easily identify the meaning of a compound word. I find that this is easier for me when attempting to read Chinese. I really want to learn 'reading' Chinese such as sentence writing. However, I get stumped with particles or expressive abstract characters. But once I understand it, it makes a whole lot of sense! What makes it easier is that sometimes I dont have to know the Chinese (Mandarin) pronunciation just to read the character (sometimes unless it's a name, a city, place, etc). So, how can I learn reading in Chinese for efficiently? How do I recognize sentence structures, characters used for particles, or those expressive characters? Thanks!

I have already begun taking Spanish (in college) and have signed up to enter Spanish II. I love spanish, but I also want to get the basics of Chinese. I already know basic spanish from high school, but I'm definitely not fluent. My major in International Business (with finance or marketing, I havent decided yet) Would it be okay to just take 2 years of spanish and 2 years of Chinese? Or would future employers be discouraged that I didnt take 4 years of the same language. I really want to take both. I know for sure that I can keep my GPA up with Spanish because I tend to catch on quickly with it, but Chinese is going to be so much harder. Any advice?

Mandarin or Cantonese? I've heard that Cantonese is more often used than Mandarin in countries in Europe (i.e. supermarkets, shops,..) I know that Mandarin is more "important" but I want to be able to put my Chinese to use. I don't really travel to mainland China nor to Hong Kong. I just want to speak with people here and maybe in USA as well. Help!
