I.e. a proper course or any materials; I am a beginner. Look for a low cost but excellent Chinese language programme that can take me up to a good level of Chinese language. Perhaps with options to progress further. Thank you very much!

How come in Pimsleur the phrase "keyi" or "can" gets rid of the "yi" when asking the question "Ni ke bu keyi gei wo yidiar qian?"-- is this unique to the verb "can" or is it optional to remove the "yi"?

I am using Rossetta stone and the pinyin setting is not that difficult but simplified Chinese characters are difficult. Are there any tricks to learning simplified Chinese characters, I find it difficult that I can't see any patterns in it?

I've been studying Japanese for a little while, and want to also get into Chinese now.
The books for Japanese I used were Japanese For Busy People & Genki Series....these books were GREAT! I really learnt tons!
Now I'm not familiar with any Chinese (mandarin) books, so I'm wondering if you guys could recommend any good ones?
I've taken a semester of Chinese at my local uni, and we didn't use books, but he recommended Integrated Chinese
Can you recommend this book?
And please, I don't want a book all in pinyin or anything, I want to use the hanzi as soon as possible.
I learned the Kana for Japanese and bought the Kana versions of the book, and this was the Best decision I could have made.
Thanks for all the info!

I've heard that "Never write a letter while you are angry" is commonly referenced as a Chinese proverb. Is there a 4-word 成语 idiom that corresponds to this? Or a 谚语 phrase? How would I actually speak Chinese idiom for it (I don't think it would be a direct translation..?)

I grew up speaking Chinese but I pretty much forgot it now. I can't read characters, and there's no one around to speak Chinese to me, so I figured I can review by reading simple Chinese pinyin sentences. I studied Chinese pinyin a little when I was in elementary school, so I know about the tones and how x makes a sh sound and q makes a ch sound. Help greatly appreciated!

I've had 3 friends die since last April. I want to get the Chinese characters for heaven tattooed on my wrist, so it's not anybody specific but for losing people close to me in general. I do not want to end up getting the wrong symbol so if anybody can send me a link with pictures and make sure it's accurate that'd be great.

Anyone know some deep and/or meaningful quotes about loneliness in Chinese? Quotes about wandering or the rain, or wandering around in the rain (lol) will also do.
Please also include the source (name of book, website link, etc.) and the whole quote in the actual Chinese words (Han characters).

Although I often try to obey the "official" stroke orders, there are some Chinese characters in which I find it better and easier to write if I write them in my own orders instead of following the prescribed stroke orders. Am I making a mockery out of the Chinese language and culture by innovating my own stroke orders? Is following the correct order indispensable or just helpful?
