I've heard that when the leaders of the 1911 Xinhai Revolution (辛亥革命) were deciding on which dialect to use as the new national standard, Mandarin beat Cantonese by only one vote. However, I also been told that this is just a myth, an urban legend.
Anyone know either way whether this is true?

I heard that when the Manchus (满族) conquered China in 1644, their Altaic language affected northern dialects, thus resulting in the modern Mandarin dialects. Does anyone know of any specific examples of this phenomenon, such as sound changes, vocabulary, or grammar?

this is for my own personal education im curious as to how close i am to translating this correctly anyone out there who has the time to translate this it is much appreciated. Alright here it is:
I went to Seattle for my holiday because I have family and friends that live there as well as a house. I lived in Seattle before I moved to Bei Jing this is why I frequently visit. I stayed in Seattle for three weeks at my old house. During this time I saw many old friends, snowboarded and family members from australia came and visited. My grandmother and grandfather on my mother side came from sydney to share christmas with us. An aunt and uncle also stayed for a few weeks in our house with us. My eldest sister came with her boyfriend on christmas. Both of them already live America. There are mountains to snowboard on within 30 minutes of my house. My favorite part of my holiday was seeing my old friends. Many of them can drive which made it easy to see a lot of them. Christmas and New Years were also fun with my family.

I asked one of my Mandarin teachers permission to use the computer at the lobby area of my Chinese class. Of course, she had wanted me to speak in Mandarin, so I blurted out the statement about using a computer. Is this direct object displacement commonly used by modern Mandarin speakers?

how can i say this paragraph in mandarin? (you don't have to include pinyin, i can read the hanzi ^^)
"I think the best way to learn a language is to speak it with other people, rather than learning it with books. But it's kind of hard to learn here because there are a lot of Cantonese speakers. Every time I go to a Chinese restaurant, I just hear Cantonese... I don't understand them. I was actually going to try and learn Canto, but there weren't enough resources online..."
Please translate that like you are having a conversation with someone lol
thanks in advance

I'm actually looking for the title of Joseph Heller's novel "Catch 22" and haven't had any luck.
I'd like to get a hold of this book.
I'm thinking it's something along the lines of “诡计二十二” (gui-3 ji-4).

How can you tell the difference by listening to it? I'm sure the writing is the same since they're both Chinese dialects so I don't think there should be a difference in writing, unless I'm wrong haha.
